If you are in the market for a new upholstery product, it's a good idea to know whether or not it is safe to use. It's no secret that upholstery can catch on fire. The following list highlights some of the fabrics most often called "fire resistant" or "fire retardant" upholstery fabrics:



Three different classifications

There are currently three different classifications for Couch Upholstery Repair. Of these, only the lowest classification (Not Rated) is based solely on how well they resist heat and flames. The highest classification (Fire Retardant) is determined by the amount of times the fabric has been tested and approved against flame exposure. Domestic upholstery fabrics are rated based on how well they resist flames up to a point. For example, fabrics classified as Class A which contains more than 0.2 percent polyurethane and which have been tested and approved in Europe, meets the European Standard EN54; fabrics classified as Class B which contains less than 0.2 percent polyurethane meet the United States Society for Fire Protection, SPFD; and fabrics classified as Class C which contain less than 0.2 percent polyurethane but have not been tested or approved in the United States are considered Unsafe.

To determine if your Upholstery Repair fabric meets these safety standards or not, bring your upholstery item for inspection to an authorized dealer. Have the upholstery fabric inspected by an accredited laboratory. The laboratory will conduct both a visual inspection and a mechanical inspection. Both will provide you with detailed information about the fabric's resistance to flame and fire codes. Once you have this information from a lab, call the manufacturer of your upholstery fabrics and arrange for the test samples.

Synthetic fabrics

Upholstery manufacturers use a special type of dye to give their New Upholstery fabric's color changes. If the manufacturer tests the fabric for flame retardants, the fabric may be marked as having a low-or zero-combination ability with one or more flame retardants. Be careful to note that some flame retardants will change the color of just one area of the fabric while leaving the other areas unaffected. For example, if a flame retardant is used in a particular area of the face fabric but not in another part of the fabric, the area containing the flame retardants will become light tan rather than the original dark tan that the fabric was designed to appear like.

As a general rule, draperies are more resistant to fire than the upholstery fabric. In general, draperies are classified according to the method of application, whether applied with water or with a brush. Flannel, which is made of synthetic fabrics, is considered the best drapery material for homes that have a history of fire problems. Although draperies tend to be resistant to fire, they do not have the fire resistance of upholstery fabrics.

Linoleum and vinyl :

Linoleum and vinyl are both fabrics that are highly flammable. Linoleum has lower flame retardant properties than vinyl. Both of these materials catch fire fairly easily when exposed to flames.
